Featured artwork by Nathan Burciaga
Nature, in its many forms, is a constant source of inspiration for my work. From animal and botanical illustrations to landscape paintings and plein air studies.
ANIMALS OF THE NATIONAL PARKS SERIES
An ongoing project illustrating five different animals that can be found in various national parks of the US, with a focus on capturing a variety in the animals as well as the environments.

California Condor. 2020. 10″ x 14″. Watercolor & gouache.

FULLERTON ARBORETUM PROJECT
With this project I wanted to focus on the natural beauty found at the Fullerton Arboretum, a local botanical garden that features a great variety of plants from around the world.
The Arboretum is separated into four biome zones; each one is densely packed with various plants and interesting sights to relax and enjoy nature. For each zone, I did a plein air botanical study to become intimately familiar with the location before creating a full landscape painting that captures a distinct scene unique to the zone.
I also wanted to explore new mediums and techniques with watercolor, such as gouache and ink which I had never used with watercolor before.

Cultivated. Heritage House. 2020. 12″ x 16″. Watercolor and gouache.

Desert. 2020. 12″ x 16″. Watercolor, gouache, and ink.
